App Privacy Policy

Northumbria University built the Cue Band app as an Open Source app. This SERVICE is provided by Northumbria University at no cost and is intended for use as is. This page is used to inform visitors regarding our policies with the collection, use, and disclosure of Personal Information if anyone decided to use our Service. If you choose to use our Service, then you agree to the collection and use of information in relation to this policy. The Personal Information that we collect is used for providing and improving the Service. We will not use or share your information with anyone except as described in this Privacy Policy. The terms used in this Privacy Policy have the same meanings as in our Terms and Conditions, which are accessible at Cue Band unless otherwise defined in this Privacy Policy.

For a better experience, while using our Service, we may require you to provide us with certain personally identifiable information. The information that we request will be retained by us and used as described in this privacy policy. The app does use third-party services that may collect information used to identify you. We want to inform you that whenever you use our Service, in a case of an error in the app we collect data and information (through third-party products) on your phone called Log Data. This Log Data may include information such as your device Internet Protocol (“IP”) address, device name, operating system version, the configuration of the app when utilizing our Service, the time and date of your use of the Service, and other statistics.

3. Cookies

Cookies are files with a small amount of data that are commonly used as anonymous unique identifiers. These are sent to your browser from the websites that you visit and are stored on your device’s internal memory. This Service does not use these “cookies” explicitly. However, the app may use third-party code and libraries that use “cookies” to collect information and improve their services. You have the option to either accept or refuse these cookies and know when a cookie is being sent to your device. If you choose to refuse our cookies, you may not be able to use some portions of this Service.

We may employ third-party companies and individuals due to the following reasons:

  • To provide the Service on our behalf;
  • To perform Service-related services; or
  • To assist us in analyzing how our Service is used.

We want to inform users of this Service that these third parties have access to their Personal Information. The reason is to perform the tasks assigned to them on our behalf. However, they are obligated not to disclose or use the information for any other purpose.

5. Cue Band account services and who are we

Cue Band was created in the context of supporting a remote large-scale study but also allowing people who are not in a study to access the app and its features. If you are involved in a study, you will have a Cue Band account that allows you to have all the data created during its use stored and secured remotely, as a way to share your data with the researchers. If are not involved, you will be able to access to most services provided my app without any of your data being shared and stored in an external location.

With or without a Cue Band account you can:

  • Schedule weekly cueing events.
  • Create diary daily entries with your drooling symptoms,
  • Manual Cueing and Mute Cueing.
  • Control and synchronize data over Bluetooth with a wearable device.
  • Provide feedback about the app using experience.

With a Cue Band you can:

  • Fill consent forms before participating in the study.
  • Do detailed assessments of your drooling symptoms.

We deliver care from sites across Northumberland and North Tyneside including an emergency care hospital, general and community hospitals, an outpatient and diagnostic centre, an elderly care unit and an integrated health and social care facility.

6. What information we collect about you and how it is used

The information processed for the purposes of your Cue Band account can be split into several different categories. Details of the information and personal data falling within each of the categories are set out below.

Data from wearable device Data captured from the wearable device includes accelerometer data, step counter data, device usage data, as well as cueing schedules. This data will be stored locally in your phone after being capture via Bluetooth from the wearable device. If you have a Cue band account this data will be stored remotely on our services. None
Diary Entries We will store data relative to your drooling symptoms with the option of sharing daily notes/reflections. None

Study Progress Data We will capture data regarding your progress in the study, that includes start and end dates of when you entered a specific stage of the study. None
Consent Data We will store data regarding your consent remotely in our server. This data includes your answers to the consent form and your name. None
Demographic Data We will store your demographic data remotely. This includes age range, ethnicity and gender. None
Account Data Required to create a Cue band account, this might include e-mail address or connections to third-party OAuth services like Google Account and Apple Account. None
Address Data This includes your address and your name. Most of this data will be disposed once used. None

7. How Cue Band uses your personal data and why

The processing and sharing your personal data are optional. Only people that agreed to participate in a study will be prompted to have their data being processed and share. At any point during a study, you as a participant might decide to opt-out of the study and thus removing the right of Cue Band to processing your data. All data will be anonymised for external publication of papers, website dissemination and organisations as expressed in the study’s research agreement and according to Northumbria University rules.

7.1 Where this data is stored and processed

The emailing list with future participants email’s will be stored using the online service SendGrid. See Sendgrid Privacy policy here: https://www.twilio.com/legal/privacy. Data will be stored securely in a cloud hosting service (e.g Digital Ocean, AWS), only directly accessible by the researchers in the study and according to the protocols for research data storage in Northumbria University. We will comply with GDPR rules ‐ all data in this category will be encrypted and available for the participants to download or be erased and forgotten. Confidential data will be disposed of in accordance with the existing systems and protocols within the university. Data will be erased at the end of the project duration.

8. Security

We value your trust in providing us your Personal Information, thus we are striving to use commercially acceptable means of protecting it. But remember that no method of transmission over the internet, or method of electronic storage is 100% secure and reliable, and we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

We have no control over and assume no responsibility for the content, privacy policies, or practices of any third-party sites or services.

10. Children’s Privacy

These Services do not address anyone under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under 13 years of age. In the case we discover that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, we immediately delete this from our servers. If you are a parent or guardian and you are aware that your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so that we will be able to do the necessary actions.

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. Thus, you are advised to review this page periodically for any changes. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page.
